Carsington Waterside hires out bikes and e-bikes for the eight mile traffic free loop around the reservoir, plus paddleboards, kayaks and canoes if you would rather be on the water than looking at it. Book a bike and a board together online and they take 20% off.

Kids bikes start at £10 an hour and adult bikes at £16, which is still less than you will spend on snacks in the first twenty minutes!

Festé is back across three spots in the city centre, free, from half eleven in the morning until twenty past eight at night. That is nine hours of outdoor arts without paying a penny.

Wear shoes you can stand up in all day, because you will tell yourself you are staying for an hour and you will still be there when it goes dark.

There is a point in every meal at Houseboat where the table goes quiet and everybody concentrates. It usually arrives with the Meen Pollichathu, a fish curry that does not mess about.

Getting that far is the hard bit, because the rest of the South Indian menu is every bit as tempting. If you cannot choose, the HB Special Platter makes the decision for you. Order a Malabar Parotta as well, because you will want something to mop with.

Banks Mill Studios moves its artists into the Market Hall for the day to sell their work and run workshops, on the same Saturday as Festé and in the same city centre.

You will walk in to browse a few prints and walk out having somehow agreed to make a ceramic bowl. It happens to everybody. The bowl is never as good as the one on the table!
