Things to do this week: Half Term Fun, Live Comedy at Vaillant Live, Plus Pete Waterman and His Model Trains!

Morning! It’s half term, which means parents everywhere are once again entering the annual “how do we tire them out before 7pm” challenge. Highland Cow Week lands at Bluebell Dairy from Monday, while Eagle Market’s running clay workshops, Lego sessions and kids padel for anyone attempting to burn through unlimited child energy reserves.

Then the grown-ups get their turn. The Last Laugh Comedy Club hits Vaillant Live on Friday, Saturday brings pre-war vintage cars to Great Northern Classics, and Pete Waterman is doing a model railway Q&A at the Museum of Making that somehow sounds both deeply niche and strangely brilliant at the same time.

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK?

🚗 - Pre-War and Vintage Day - Cars Built Back When Brakes Were More of a Suggestion!
📍 - Great Northern Classics
📅 - Sat 30th May
⏰ - 10:00
🎟️ - Free entry
📷 - @greatnorthernclassics

Great Northern Classics is hosting a full pre-war and vintage day on Saturday with cars and bikes from before 1940 rolling in for a gathering of chrome, crank handles, and engineering that feels slightly terrifying by modern standards.

There’ll be displays throughout the site, plenty of indoor space, and the Tram Shed café running breakfast in the morning and lunch from noon for anyone needing a sit down after hearing the phrase “they don’t build them like this anymore” for the eighteenth time.

Free entry, free parking, and a very high chance of leaving knowing far more about carburettors than you did when you arrived.

SCRUMPTIOUS SCOOP

🍰 - Meaks Of Melbourne - A Feel Good Cafe For Breakfast, Lunch And Cake
📍 - Derby Road, Melbourne
📅 - Monday to Saturday: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
📅 - Sunday: 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM
📷 - @meaksofmelbourne

Early espresso, breakfast, lunch, cake, laptop time, prosecco time. Meaks covers the lot, seven days a week, with loads of seating indoors and a courtyard that’s made for slow coffees when the weather decides to behave.

The menu caters well for gluten free, vegan, and kids options too, so the whole table can eat without anyone doing the “I’ll just have something small” performance.

ACTIVITY ALLEY

🎤 - The Last Laugh Comedy Club - Four Comedians, Several Pints, and Somebody Laughing Way Too Loud!
📍- Vaillant Live
📅 - Fri 29th May
⏰ - Doors 7:00 PM / Show 7:30 PM
📷 - @vaillantlive

The Last Laugh Comedy Club lands at Vaillant Live this Friday with Barry Dodds hosting alongside Roman Harris, Katie Tracey and Dominic Holland.

One of those Friday nights where the room gets progressively louder, somebody near the front becomes part of the show against their will, and the "couple of drinks then home" plan quietly disappears before the interval.

FRESH EXPERIENCES

🚂 - 75 Years of the Model Railway with Pete Waterman - From Hit Records To Tiny Trains With Remarkable Commitment!
📍- Museum of Making
📅 - Sat 30th May
⏰ - 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
🎟️ - £6.00 to £12.00
📷 - @derbymuseums

Pete Waterman, the man behind Stock Aitken Waterman, Rick Astley, and half the songs your mum still knows word for word, is also deeply committed to model railways. Deeply.

So committed, in fact, that him and the Railnuts hold the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest portable model railway, which feels like the exact type of achievement nobody sees coming in a music career.

The Museum of Making is opening after hours for the evening with the railway running, volunteers around the layout, a Q&A with Pete, and the bar open throughout, which feels important because somebody will absolutely spend 25 minutes discussing miniature signal boxes with full emotional investment.
