Things to do this week: Rum & Reggae Festival at Elvaston Castle, America Day at GNC, Plus the Monthly Farmers Market!

Morning! Rum & Reggae takes over Elvaston Castle on Saturday with David Rodigan, General Levy, rum cocktails, Jamaican street food, and at least one bloke in a bucket hat reliving 1998 in real time. Multiple ticket tiers have already sold out.

Also this weekend: America Day returns to Great Northern Classics with American cars, bikes, music, and conversations about engines that somehow last longer than some relationships. Then Sunday brings the farmers’ market back to Derby Market Hall with local produce, artisan bakes, and bread that disappears frighteningly fast.

SCRUMPTIOUS SCOOP

🍺 - The Pattenmakers Arms - A Village Pub in Duffield Where the Beer is Brewed Four Miles Away and the Pies Win Awards!
📍 - 4 Crown Street, Duffield
⏰ - Mon to Thu 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM
⏰ - Fri to Sat 12:00 PM to 12:00 AM
⏰ - Sun 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM

The Pattenmakers Arms is part of the Shiny Brewery family, so the pint in your hand was brewed about four miles away in Little Eaton, which feels reassuringly efficient. It’s got the feel of a classic village pub, but the food quietly overachieves. Panko king prawns, smash burgers, brie stuffed chicken, Derbyshire sirloin, and vegan options that weren’t clearly added five minutes before printing the menu.

Thursday is the main event though. Award-winning pie night from 5:30pm, two for £25, and the type of pastry that makes conversation stop briefly while everyone recalculates how often they can realistically come back.

ACTIVITY ALLEY

🇺🇸 - America Day - Chrome, V8 Engines, And Conversations That Somehow Last 45 Minutes!
📍 - Great Northern Classics
📅 - Sat 24th May
⏰ - 10:00 AM start
🎟️ - Free entry, free parking
📷 - @greatnorthernclassics

America Day rolls back into Great Northern Classics on Saturday with American cars, bikes, music, and enough polished chrome to temporarily blind somebody in direct sunlight. The Tram Shed café will be running breakfast in the morning and lunch from noon, which is helpful because these events have a habit of turning a “quick look round” into half your day disappearing completely.

You’ll spend ten minutes admiring a Mustang, twenty minutes overhearing someone explain engine specs with terrifying confidence, and another half hour debating whether you’d actually suit a Cadillac.

FRESH EXPERIENCES

🥕 - Derby Farmers' Market - Fresh Bread, Local Produce, And People Taking Tomatoes Very Seriously!
📍 - Derby Market Hall
📅 - Sun 24th May
⏰ - 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
🎟️ - Free entry
📷 - @derbymarkethall

Derby Market Hall’s monthly farmers’ market is back on Sunday with local growers, independent food traders, fresh produce, artisan bakes, and the type of stalls that make you suddenly care quite deeply about chutney.

It’s a solid way to spend a Sunday morning wandering round with a coffee, pretending you always buy vegetables this fresh and definitely know what to do with them afterwards.

Worth getting there early before somebody else grabs the good bread and the brownies that were “for later”.
