Things To Do This Weekend: The Ska Day Party, Dracula Returns to Derby, Plus Simon Reeve at Vaillant Live!

Morning! This weekend has a Ska Day Party on Saturday afternoon that starts at 3pm and doesn’t stop until 8. Friday kicks things off with a Vampire Poetry Slam at Chapel Street Arts Centre and the Dracula Audio Tour launch at the Museum if you want to ease into the weekend on gothic terms.

Saturday also has Simon Reeve at Vaillant Live in the evening and a card making workshop at the Market Hall at 2pm for anyone who wants something quieter than a ska dancefloor.

Five hours of ska covering Jamaican roots, 2-Tone classics, reggae flavours, and modern ska punk, all powered by brass sections loud enough to reorganise your internal organs slightly.

The Specials, Madness, Toots & The Maytals, Reel Big Fish and more, with a dancefloor that’ll slowly fill up with people doing movements their knees stopped approving of around 2009.

The Pepperpot has quietly become one of those places people keep recommending after “accidentally” staying there for three hours.

The champagne breakfast pulls people in fast. Pastries, eggs royale, smoked salmon, pancakes, Outpost coffee, and a glass of champagne before midday that makes the whole table start acting noticeably more sophisticated.

Then Sundays arrive and the roasts take over. Slow roasted beef, Yorkshire puddings, truffled cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, and gravy that nobody is leaving behind politely.

Sticky toffee pudding finishes things off in the exact way you’d hope it would.

Award winning poet and former Dracula Events Specialist Dan Webber is digging into Derby’s surprisingly long relationship with the world’s most famous vampire, marking 102 years since Dracula first hit the stage here.

Part history talk, part gothic deep dive, and part “how on earth did Derby get wrapped up in this?”, the afternoon explores Bram Stoker connections, theatre history, and a century of local vampire-related commitment that nobody could’ve predicted in 1924.
